What is a boutique
hotel?
Boutique hotel is a term originating in America to describe intimate,
usually luxurious or quirky hotel environments. Boutique hotels differentiate
themselves from larger chain/branded hotels and motels by providing
an exceptional and personalized level of accommodation and services
/ facilities.
Typically boutique hotels are furnished in a themed, stylish, unique and/or
aspirational manner. Usually considerably smaller than a mainstream
hotel, ranging from 3 to 100 guest rooms, boutique hotels often
provide comforts beyond that available in larger hotels. Not all
compete with large hotels on service and facilities, but offer more
in terms of uniqueness, both in location and style / class.
Boutique Hotels is not a scientific term and is totally open to
personal opinion and interpretation. In Chiang Mai many accommodation
places claim the title, but some fall short. These days Chiang Mai has many boutique hotels and resorts, with new ones opening all the time. While they vary widely in their levels of uniqueness, imagination, flair or "boutiqueness" (I don't think that last verb exists), they will mostly provide a different experience from staying in a big block hotel.
